📊 The Most Overrated Stats in the NBA
🧠 Not All Numbers Tell the Truth
In today’s NBA, we’re surrounded by stats.
Points per game. Triple-doubles. PER. Box scores.
Analytics are everywhere.
But sometimes?
Numbers lie.
Certain stats look great on paper but don’t always reflect a player’s true impact on winning.
🏀 PPG: The Most Misleading King
Points Per Game (PPG) is the headline stat for most fans.
And while scoring is important, it doesn’t always tell you the full story.
Empty calories scoring exists.
Bad shot selection can inflate PPG.
Volume shooters hurt efficiency.
A player dropping 25 PPG on 42% shooting with high usage isn’t always helping the team as much as it looks.
📊 Triple-Doubles: Cool, But Often Hollow
Triple-doubles have become way more common in the modern NBA.
More possessions
Faster pace
Stat chasing at times
Russell Westbrook normalized triple-doubles, but not every 10-10-10 game translates into actual wins.
Rebounds and assists can often be empty if they don’t come in meaningful moments.
🔢 +/- (Plus-Minus): Context Matters
Plus-minus is one of the trickiest stats.
Bench unit time can skew it.
Garbage time minutes distort it.
Starters playing against backups inflate numbers.
A +15 sounds great — but who was on the floor with you?
Were you playing real minutes or during blowouts?
Raw +/- needs context.
💣 Single-Game Explosions
Scoring 50 once doesn’t make you a superstar.
Consistency matters.
NBA history is full of guys who dropped 40 or 50 once or twice but couldn’t sustain elite production.
We remember the highlights, but championships are won with steady impact, not random outbursts.
🧠 Fufu’s Take
Numbers are fun.
They spark debates.
They create headlines.
But basketball is still a feel game.
Who controls pace?
Who plays defense?
Who makes teammates better?
Advanced stats matter — but only when paired with your eyes.
That’s why scouting will always be more than spreadsheets.
